Library Director
BROWN COUNTY (IN) PUBLIC LIBRARY
Brown County Public Library…a Library celebrating its past as it moves into the future! Be a part of the Library’s
journey in pursuit of excellence as its next Library Director. The Board is currently seeking a new leader to continue the Library’s excellent
services and programs and to continue its community collaborations. The Brown County Public Library is an independent library district with a
permanent tax rate exclusively dedicated to public library services. Governed by a seven-member Board of Trustees, the Library staff, 6.64FTE and
20+ volunteers, serve 14,500 citizens in Brown County, Indiana, with a budget of $561,760. The Library consists of a Main 18,000 sq. ft. library and
a single branch facility (Cordry-Sweetwater) staffed by volunteers and open 12-15 hours each week. The Library circulates 191,568 annually.
In addition to a collection of 91,690 items, library customers enjoy the library’s vibrant art collection and access to its public meeting room
facilities.
Brown County, one hour south of Indianapolis, the state capital, is the site of the first
Indiana arts colony. Established by Indiana artist, T.C. Steele, the county thrived as it cultivated an ongoing arts colony. The County’s rustic
beauty and charm led to its becoming a retreat for local citizens and visitors-a place where people “…reconnect with each other.” Through its
emphasis on the arts and its beautiful rural setting, Brown County offers rich cultural amenities and offers excellent recreational activities.

Responsibilities: In addition to a commitment to the mission and philosophy of public library service, the Library
Director must demonstrate excellent leadership skills, have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and work effectively with library
trustees, elected officials, staff and community groups. See Library Director for the complete

Qualifications: Minimum qualifications are an ALA-accredited MLS degree or equivalent with three years professional
library experience, the ability to qualify for Indiana Library certification, and a demonstrated working knowledge of Indiana State Board of Accounts
procedures and policies. Preferred experience includes a minimum of two years supervisory/management experience in a public library as a branch
manager or department head, strong written and oral communication skills, and ability to work successfully with staff and community stakeholders.
Success reporting to a policy making board is also highly desirable.
Compensation: The starting salary is $45,000 negotiable based on experience. Benefits include Indiana Public
Employees Retirement Fund participation, a deferred compensation plan and a medical reimbursement plan. Other benefits may be negotiable.
